Get your in-depth directions on how to get to Ford Field for the Final Four

Andrew Norton

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has set up a website dedicated to helping folks get down to Ford Field for the Final Four this weekend. They've broken down the directions for people traveling from north, south, east, and west. There is also a PDF for each section (north, south, etc.) that you can download and/or print out for your trip.

March Madness Marches to Motown

Andrew Norton

Today, March 16th, is one of the least productive days in offices across America. Why? People are swept up in the giddiness that is filling out brackets for the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament a.k.a March Madness. Who do you have in the Final Four? Do you have Michigan State winning it all? How about Michigan surprising everyone (including themselves) and dancing into the Sweet 16? Should I pick Siena over Ohio State as an upset even though Ohio State is practically playing a home game (only an hour from Columbus)? Which 12 Seed will beat a 5 (I pick Western Kentucky over Illinois)? It's just a lot of fun to fill out a bracket (or two) for the office pool or go against your friends online at any number of sites now hosting bracket pools.

This is the first time since 1998 that both Michigan and Michigan State have been in The Big Dance. That was back when my beloved alma mater, Western Michigan, was an 11 Seed and upset 6 Seed Clemson. I was interning at an accounting firm in Coldwater and some fellow Western alums and I ran across the street to the local bar when the final minutes were ticking off the clock and Western was still in it. Hey, you know who Michigan plays in the first round? Number 7 Seed Clemson. There's your random bit of meaningless trivia for today.

The Final Four is in Detroit and that is not only great news for Detroit, it's great news for our entire state. With bad news piling up quicker than Michigan State's Goran Suton picks up fouls this will be a nice distraction in the newspapers. It will also give the Detroit economy a brief (but necessary) boost with hotels, restaurants, and other local businesses reaping the benefits of the national spotlight and fans.

This week's poll question deals with March Madness so without further ado, vote!

Free Fishing Weekend February 14-15

Andrew Norton

The winter Free Fishing Weekend in Michigan will take place February 14-15, 2009. Take your Valentine out for a day of fishing this year without having to purchase a license :). Actually, it's a great way to introduce entire families to the fun of fishing without having to invest in a license. It is supposed to warm up between now and then so ice fishing might not be a possibility (at least here in southwest Michigan).

Here's what it says at the Michigan DNR website:

All fishing license fees will be waived for two days. Residents and outstate visitors may enjoy fishing on both inland and Great Lakes' waters for all species of fish. All fishing regulations will still apply.

Constantine Harvest Festival was fun

Andrew Norton

The weather couldn't have been better for Constantine's Harvest Festival this past Saturday. The annual event was originally scheduled for September 13th, but was washed out by the rainy weekend courtesy of the remnants of Hurricane Ike. This is a nice festival that has improved with age. It started out pretty small about 6 years ago and now is a nice small town festival.

Lots to do at the Constantine Harvest Festival

Water Street was closed off for the festival. There were bands set to play all day long (and into the evening, too) at one end of the street. Tons of free stuff like horse-drawn carriage rides, inflatable bouncy rides for kids, and kids games for only a quarter.

The crowd was pretty steady while I was there and it was great to see this festival become a bit more polished than past years.

1st Annual Mackinac Bridge Antique Tractor Crossing

Andrew Norton

The 1st Annual Mackinac Bridge Antique Tractor Crossing is September 12, 2008. Man, if they were doing this on a Saturday I would SO be there. I love antique tractors and I love the Mackinac Bridge - what a combo! Rain or shine the parade is scheduled to begin around 1pm in Mackinaw City and head north over the Mackinac Bridge to St. Ignace and end at the Kewadin Casino for a weekend tractor display. The only thing that will delay or cancel the parade is high winds. The crossing of over 600 antique tractors will take an estimated 3 hours to complete.

Check current Mackinac Bridge Conditions

On Saturday evening, September 13, is the Truck Parade of Lights featuring numerous big rigs. The 13th Annual Big Rig Truck Show will be taking place in St. Ignace.

It's a busy weekend at the Mackinac Bridge as Sunday is the 'Bike the Mighty Mac' event beginning at 7am. Looks like a fun weekend to be up at 'The Bridge.'

Anatomy of a Murder turns 50

Andrew Norton

The bestselling novel, Anatomy of a Murder, written by John D. Voelker (under the pen name Robert Traver) and published in 1958 is celebrating 50 years of being in print. Events will take place in Ishpeming, Marquette, and Lansing to mark this historic novel's 50th Anniversary. About a year ago I built a page about the actual murder the book and movie are based on that includes movie clips and other trivia bits about Anatomy of a Murder.

Upcoming Events Include -

Things kickoff September 18 at 7pm in the Carnegie Public Library, Ishpeming, Michigan.

Kick-off event will include the unveiling of the Voelker Collection web exhibit by the Central Upper Peninsula and Northern Michigan University Archives about the writing of Anatomy of a Murder. Activities will also include refreshments at the library and a self-guided walking tour of Voelker sites in Ishpeming.

The film "Anatomy of a Murder" will be shown September 19 at 7pm at the Marquette County Courthouse where the courtroom scenes were shot.

For a full list of events visit the 50th Anniversary page.

Bonus! Watch a courtroom scene from the movie. One of (if not THE) best court dramas ever filmed.
