Introducing the Detroit Gift Box

Andrew Norton

The Detroit Gift Box is a nice little showcase of some of the more well-known (and tasty) products to come out of Detroit. It's something I have wanted to do for a while to show some solidarity with the much maligned city. Here is what you get:

  • 2 snack bags of Detroit's famous Better Made Potato Chips
  • One bottle of Vernors
  • 10 oz. jar of Sanders delicious milk chocolate hot fudge topping
  • One pound of Germack Pistachios
  • 6 oz. bag of Caramel Popcorn from the Detroit Popcorn Company
  • One 'Made in Detroit' sticker to show your Detroit pride

Buy the Detroit Gift Box for only $28.79

Use a Yooper Scooper to clear snow this winter

Andrew Norton

[UPDATE]I have used my Yooper Scooper quite a few times already this winter and I have to say that this is probably THE best investment I have made lately. Clearing the driveway takes a fraction of the time it used to take using the old shovel. Plus, I no longer have a sore back for two days following a session of driveway shoveling.

For the record, my driveway is crushed limestone and my Yooper Scooper glides right over it without any trouble at all. Also, I am 6' 4" and the handle is just right - I don't have to stoop over to use it properly :).

Just push, tip, and dump the snow. I love it!

Save your back and save your money (by not buying a snowblower and filling it with gas) with a Yooper Scooper (as it's called in the Upper Peninsula) or as it is more commonly known, a Snow Scoop. You simply push the scoop until it is full and then drag it to where you want to dump the snow. Repeat until your driveway is clear :).

I'm ordering my new snow scoop today in anticipation of the snowy forecast. You can either order one off of Amazon [affiliate link] - the 22" Suncast model - or from a Michigan-based company - Silver Bear Manufacturing has their 22" snow scoop for under $70. The Silver Bear snow scoop is highly recommended by folks who have had the same one for over 20 years - can't argue with that!

If you are seeking ways to avoid the snow, visit this list of Indoor Water Parks in Michigan.

Help us help the Food Bank Council of Michigan this Christmas season

Andrew Norton

We donate 1% of every sale to the Food Bank Council of Michigan. The Food Bank then uses its buying power in addition to various alliances and resources to distribute food to food banks across the state of Michigan. Now more than ever, the Food Bank Council of Michigan needs our help. From the Food Bank Council's website -

Last year, FBCM food programs procured and distributed 50.2 million pounds of food for food banks to feed people in Michigan—up 25% over the previous year. And this year, we’re on track to do even more as the need for emergency food has increased, on average, over 30% across the state.

To illustrate the Food Bank Council's buying power head over to their website and play "Fill the Fridge." It is a great way to illustrate to both kids and adults just how far their donations can go.

For instance, I plugged in a donation of $200 and it would feed a family of 4 for 17 weeks (just over 4 months)! That's calculated out to 1,400 meals, 2,000 pounds of food at a value of $3,000. If only investment bankers and the stock market could turn $200 into $3,000 as easily!

Learn more about what you can do to help feed Michigan's hungry at the Food Bank Council of Michigan website. In addition to money, you can give of your time - which we all can scrounge for some time to spare.

So please, remember that when you buy a gift basket from us that a portion of that money goes to the Food Bank Council of Michigan to help feed the hungry. That's why we like to say that with Gift Baskets From Michigan, you can give a gift that gives back.
