What's your favorite pancake topping?

Andrew Norton

It's maple sugaring time again and with National Pancake Day (February 24th - dang, how did I miss that?) recently behind us it got me wondering just what exactly people like to put on their pancakes. I'm partial to real Michigan Maple Syrup. Once you try pure maple syrup you will never buy the maple "flavored" syrups again (unless you don't care about tasting awesomeness versus ho-hum-ness). Quick Maple Syrup Fact: It takes about 40 gallons of maple sap to make 1 gallon of maple syrup. Now you know why the "real" maple syrup is more expensive than the nasty sugary corn syrup maple syrup. Here's more maple syrup facts.

You can probably guess which one I'm voting for. How about you?

We've updated our Gift Basket Shipping page to include the map below. It illustrates the estimated time it will take to ship your gift basket across the continental United States. Use this image to help figure out the transit time for your gift. Remember, that the heavy shipping season around Christmas definitely makes these estimates subject to change.

Lower prices on two of our gift baskets

Andrew Norton

We have lowered our prices on two of our more popular gift baskets for under $30. These are not sale prices or temporary price cuts so you won't "miss out" if you don't place an order today. The Movie Night gift basket was $27.79 and now sells for $18.79. The gift basket has the same yummy treats it always has: Sanders chocolate covered raisins, sour cherry candies, gourmet caramel corn, and two Sanders caramel candy bars.

The Very Cherry Sampler was $29.79 and is now $26.79. You'll still get the flavor packed dried Michigan cherries, chocolate covered cherry coffee from Fireside Coffee, chocolate cherry gourmet popcorn, Michigan Cherry Preserves, and more. A lot of people ask if the Very Cherry Sampler is so named because it is filled with smaller items than the Very Cherry Gift Basket - no, it's just filled with fewer cherry products and in a different basket. The products are all regular sized.

Do you plant a vegetable garden?

Andrew Norton

In these tough economic times a growing number of people are doing just that. Those with minimal property living in towns and cities are even going so far as to tear up their grass and plant a garden in its place. Record numbers are being set by the seed companies for quantity of seeds sold as people everywhere plant gardens. Not only does having your own garden save you money at the grocery store, it also guarantees that you know everything that was (or was not) put into the soil to grow those vegetables. Myself, I like to only use compost and water to turn out fantastic veggies from our garden. Ever since I read "The World Without Us" (particularly about the study of how long non-organic fertilizers remain in the soil) I have refrained from using chemical fertilizers.

Three metropolitan Michigan cities make Top 10 Most Affordable Cities List

Andrew Norton

The Ten Most and Least Affordable Cities list was put together by the National Association of Home Builders. There were two lists of Most and Least Affordable Cities - those with populations over 500,000 and those under 500,000. It's not surprising that no Michigan cities made the Least Affordable list, but it was nice to see three metropolitan cities make the Most Affordable list for metropolitan areas over 500,000 in population. The unfortunate aspect is the reasoning behind being affordable. If you look at the most affordable cities list you will see it is dominated by Midwest towns that had relied heavily on manufacturing and now suffer from high unemployment.

Forbes.com tweaked this listing because of the above problem and eliminated cities like Detroit and Phoenix based on additional criteria that "excluded any city any city where home prices fell by more than 10% last year."

I think Michigan is a good place to invest in right now because we've been in a recession for a few years now and the state has been positioning itself for new technologies and industries that I think will put us ahead of the nation in the long run. It's all about perseverance and staying the course.

Now for the list of Michigan cities with 500,000+ population that made the Most Affordable List:

2. Warren-Troy-Farmington Hills, MI 4. Detroit-Livonia-Dearborn, MI 5. Grand Rapids-Wyoming, MI

Here's the Michigan cities with population under 500,000 that made the Most Affordable List:

1. Lansing-East Lansing, MI 5. Bay City, MI 6. Battle Creek, MI 8. Saginaw-Saginaw Township North, MI
