Posts from Christmas' past

Andrew Norton

Here is a little roundup of a few posts from last December. Easy Slow-Cooker Bread Pudding Simply delicious when you follow the recipe. I made this a couple of weeks ago with my two-year-old son assisting. Needless to say, in all of the chaos I added twice as much butter and forgot the sugar.

Then I couldn't figure out why my son didn't want to finish his helping. He was the guinea pig - I let him try it first thinking it was a big treat. Little did I know how unpleasant it tasted.

The Christmas Tree Ship A brief look at the history and mystery surrounding the Christmas Tree Ship that once delivered Christmas trees from the forests of Michigan to the docks of Chicago.

Watch the trailer for 'It's A Wonderful Life'

[EDIT] - this post is from 2006 and the video mentioned below no longer works. A short video of the trailer is included instead. This is one of my favorite Christmas movies (I'll have to make a top ten list of my favorites sometime) and not a year goes by that I don't watch it. Of course I have it on DVD so I can watch it whenever I like and away from the computer. Pop some popcorn and enjoy the show.

Don't have high-speed internet? Here is the trailer for the film (1 min 46 sec.) -

Put up your Christmas lights before it gets cold

Andrew Norton

I put up our Christmas lights last Friday with temperatures in the upper 50s. It hasn't been that warm when I have put up our Christmas lights in about three years. It was not a coincidence that that was one of the most enjoyable times I have had putting up the lights. Anyway, it is going to get cold here in Michigan towards the end of the week so you if are planning on putting up Christmas lights you might want to do it sooner rather than later. Just my $.02.

Here is a short video clip of those famous Christmas lights from last year. You probably saw them on the news last year. I saw them on the internet and had them emailed to me.

Pretty cool. If I were a neighbor it would be cool for one night. After that I would dread the day the guy ever put up all of those lights. The music that the lights are set to is by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

If the video player does not work you can view it here.

Airplane parts supplier looks to set up shop at Sawyer International Airport

Andrew Norton

Wabash Wheel and Brake, Inc. hopes to be able to add 100-250 high paying jobs to the Marquette county economy if things fall into place and they are able to open up their company at Sawyer International Airport. The company would refurbish airplane wheels and brakes for the airline industry. The 100-250 jobs would pay around $18 per hour. This startup depends on a few things falling into place -

  • $4.1 million loan from the federal program New Market Tax Credits
  • $1 million loan from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation

For more details, see the article at The Mining Journal.

Sounds like a great deal if everything falls into place and Wabash Wheel and Brake, Inc. can get started. They plan on hiring locally with the only requirements being that potential employees have a good attitude and work ethic. No experience would be necessary as the company consultant, Steve Burns, said he could train anyone for the jobs at the potential plant.

UPS needs Detroiters for extra help this Christmas season

Andrew Norton

UPS is looking to hire more than 1,200 temporary workers in the Metro Detroit area to help them get packages delivered this Christmas season. About one-third of the needed drivers and two-thirds of the necessary package handlers have already been hired. You had better be quick if you are hoping for a job. Who knows? That temporary job might just turn into full-time work if you're lucky. Competition for the jobs is fierce given the state of Michigan's economy.

The Detroit News reports -

The only requirements for applicants are that they be at least 18 years old, able to lift 70 pounds and have authorization to work in the United States.

Starting pay ranges from $8.50 to $9.50 per hour for package handlers and $14.70 for drivers. Job seekers can only apply online at www.upsjobs.com.
