Is the Michigan State Fair the nation's oldest?

Andrew Norton

Did New York hold a state fair before Michigan? The 2006 Michigan State Fair kicks off tomorrow and runs through September 4th. In performing some research to give a little background information on the state fair I have come across conflicting reports as to whether or not the Michigan State Fair is the nation's oldest state fair. At this page on the Michigan.gov website it states -

The Michigan State Agricultural Society sponsored Michigan's first state fair in Detroit, September 25-27, 1849. It was the second state fair in the United States. The first was in New York.

Then, over on this page of the Michigan.gov website it says -

The Nation's Oldest State Fair was officially first held in 1849, only twelve years after Michigan attained statehood.

The New York State Fair website claims that their fair began in 1841, eight years before Michigan's inaugural state fair was held. This would go with the first quoted statement above. I just find it strange that there are conflicting reports on the same website (Michigan.gov).

So the answer would be that the Michigan State Fair should claim the title of "Second Oldest State Fair" unless someone knows anything that contradicts the above information.

On the subject of the Michigan State Fair I should mention something. I have never been to the Michigan State Fair and wanted so see the fairgrounds so I did a search at Google Maps and used the satellite view. That is where this cool overhead picture from the Michigan State Fair fairgrounds came from.

Apparently, this is a park with the lower peninsula as a fish pond (hard to tell from the picture). According to the map of the state fairgrounds this is designated as the "Outdoor Zone Park."

Update: No apparent plot to blow up Mackinac Bridge

Andrew Norton

Update: This is in relation to yesterday's post about a possible terror plot involving the Mackinac Bridge. The FBI is reporting that there is no evidence linking the three Texas men that were arrested in Caro for purchasing 80 cell phones and having about 1,000 total cell phones in their van with a terrorist plot.

Also, yesterday I commented that I hoped the only thing these men were guilty of was selling phones at a markup that others could get for the same price at Wal-Mart. Evidently, these phones are more expensive in Texas and there is a great enough demand for these guys to make a trip across the country purchasing these phones for profit.

What I said yesterday still applies today -

I am not yet ready to live in a country where acts of terrorism are a daily occurrence.

Is there a terror plot to blow up the Mackinac Bridge?

Andrew Norton

Three Texas men of Middle Eastern heritage were picked up by authorities in Caro after purchasing 80 prepaid cell phones at a local Wal-Mart. Upon their arrest around 1,000 prepaid cell phones were found in their van along with photos of the Mackinac Bridge.

Mackinac Bridge linking Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas

Does an overabundance of prepaid cell phones and pictures of the Mackinac Bridge mean that the world's third-largest suspension bridge is a target for possible terrorism? It is still too early to tell. There is already public outcry from the Arab and Muslim population about ethnic profiling being the real reason these men were picked up.

I don't care what color or religion you are. I would be suspicious of a white guy in an expensive three-piece suit if he was purchasing 80 prepaid cell phones. The three men and their families are stating that this was merely a business venture. They were purchasing cell phones to sell back in Texas for a profit.

The bombs in Madrid, Spain in 2004 were detonated using cell phones. I don't blame the Wal-Mart employee and local authorities for being suspicious. The media would have their heads if they had done nothing and something horrific had happened such as the Mackinac Bridge being blown up.

A relative of the three men, Ala Mustafa, was quoted by CBS 11TV (a Texas CBS affiliate) as saying, “I want to congratulate them, that small town in Michigan. Congratulations you got the spot in the media and the whole world. Everybody knows your town now. Release those guys, they are innocent.”

I am pretty sure that the Tuscola County law enforcement officials are not in cohorts with the local chamber of commerce in some grand scheme for national publicity that involves arresting innocent people in order to be mentioned by the national media.

I really do hope that there is not a plot to destroy the Mackinac Bridge. If the only thing these guys are guilty of is purchasing cheap cell phones and selling them for more money to folks who don't know they can get the same deal at Wal-Mart - I am okay with that. I am not yet ready to live in a country where acts of terrorism are a daily occurrence.

Alternative fuel turns out to be Manhattan's trash

Andrew Norton

Gary Varisto of C&V Logistics thought he had a great idea that would help the environment and create jobs at the same time. What he thought to be waste paper that could be pelletized into a burnable fuel that would create electricity instead turned out to be trash from Manhattan. He already had interest in the product from Cadillac Renewable Energy to use his product. Now the trash sits at Seng Dock & Trucking waiting to be disposed. Varisto doesn't have the funds available to pay for the trash removal. He had already invested $160,000 in the pelletizing equipment and his dreams of generating jobs and electricity with waste paper have been dashed.

Thoughts on the New Michigan License Plate

Andrew Norton

Just so you know, this is the new commemorative plate that will replace the Great Lakes Splendor plate that was introduced in 1997. It is not the plate that will replace the classic blue Michigan license plate. That one will have a white background and blue letters to aid law enforcement officers.

New Michigan License Plate

I actually like the look of this plate as far as the design elements included. What I do not like is the color scheme. The neon green and electric blue looks like something from the 80's. I would have liked to have had the green and blue be a bit darker. I realize they are keeping the colors light in order to make the letters and numbers stand out, but I find them ugly.

The city skyline in the upper left contains the Renaissance Center, State Capitol, and the Amway Grand Plaza. The upper right shows off our pine tree forests and the Mighty Mac graces the bottom of the plate. In the middle is an outline of Michigan and the surrounding Great Lakes.

What do you think?
