Wonderful 16mm footage of the Detroit Zoo during the 1940s

Andrew Norton

Lately I've been posting beautiful photos from across Michigan on Fridays, but I found this gem on YouTube this morning and just had to share it. Enjoy the thrill of heading back in time to the 1940s and getting a peak at what the Detroit Zoo looked like back then. The footage was shot by Fred W. Boegelin and he shot numerous rolls of footage around Detroit during the 40s and 50s. The old raccoon exhibit was a hoot! There is even a brief sighting of some non-native Wolverines in Part 3. I love the way the movies were put together with descriptions of what was to follow in the next segment. You can tell that Fred was a real film buff and worked hard to get the shots just right.

Welcome fall with new Pure Michigan ad, Deep Breath

Andrew Norton

Today, September 22, at 5:18pm (to be exact) fall officially begins and summer draws to an end. Even though 2009 was the summer that really wasn't summer I still look forward to, and enjoy, the fall. It's a great time for taking hikes and enjoying the beautiful fall colors in Michigan. Take a 'Deep Breath' and enjoy the changing of the seasons with the latest Pure Michigan commercial.

Video of Ernie Harwell's speech thanking Tigers fans

Andrew Norton

It's a wonderful night for me. I really feel lucky to be here, and I want to thank you for that warm welcome. I want to express my deep appreciation to Mike Ilitch, Dave Dombrowski and the Tigers for that video salute and also for the many great things they've done for me and my family throughout my career here with the Tigers. In my almost 92 years on this Earth, the good Lord has blessed me with a great journey, and the blessed part of that journey is that it's going to end here in the great state of Michigan.

Uncle John's Cider Mill near St. Johns is worth the trip

Andrew Norton

When we lived in Lansing, my wife and I would make at least one trip each fall up to Uncle John's Cider Mill. Housed in a wonderful old dairy barn, the gleaming modern equipment can be witnessed from the hayloft viewing area. You can munch on their delicious donuts while drinking some cider and watching the cider making process. They have special events going on every weekend in September and October. Their corn maze is supposed to open up tomorrow, September 12 and they have a ton of fun things for kids to enjoy. There are pedal tractors, wagon rides, a nature trail, and much more. Some of the activities are free and some just charge a nominal fee.

Whatever you do, do not leave without picking up one of their wonderful fresh-baked pies. Oh man, they are SO good.

Here is a brief video overview of the cider mill operation at Uncle John's Cider Mill:
