The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg

Andrew Norton

Last week I watched a superb documentary, The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg. It was recommended to me by someone on twitter (sorry, I can't remember who it was) and before that recommendation I had never heard of the documentary. Hank Greenberg was widely known as the first Jewish baseball superstar in the major leagues. He was constantly taunted with racial epithets by fans and ballplayers alike. He was also the first sports star to enlist in the armed forces when war was declared in WWII. He came close to tying/beating Babe Ruth's home run record with 58 home runs in 1938 - only two short of tying The Babe. This is really a well put together film that really gives you an in-depth look at Hank Greenberg, the man, in addition to Hank Greenberg, baseball player.

Time lapse video of 2009 Chicago to Mackinac sailboat race

Andrew Norton

Ken Scott Photography created this mesmerizing time lapse video of sailboats in the Chicago to Mackinac race. The photos were taken as the sailboats passed Sleeping Bear Point and you can see the southern end of South Manitou Island in the background as well. The time lapse aspect makes the boats appear to skate across the lake's surface as if it were ice. I also found it amusing to watch the people at the beach as they look like ants jumping in and out of the water.

Three Rivers potato farm, Walther Farms, featured in Lay's Potato Chip commercial

Andrew Norton

I received a link to this commercial on twitter via MSUGreeen. While watching the commercial I saw that it featured Brian and Gary Walthers of Walther Farms. Their sign for Walthers Farms in the commercial looked familiar and I knew I had seen it before. Turns out it's a forehead slap moment for me as the farm is just up the road outside of Three Rivers, Michigan. Now I know why their sign looked SO familiar ;).
