Michigan Gas Prices Week of 7/3/06

Andrew Norton

As I wrote last Thursday gas prices have indeed shot up (like a bottle rocket) for the 4th of July extended weekend. The average price of gas in Michigan as of today, July 3rd, is $2.986. This morning I saw prices anywhere from $2.97 to $3.09. It's funny (strange, not ha-ha) that the station near us that had the lowest prices (before raising them $.32 overnight last Tuesday) at $2.77 last week is now the highest in the area at $3.09. Nothing like a little gas price gouging in honor of our country's birth.

Expect to Pay More for Gas Across Michigan This Weekend

Conflict in the Mid-East, increased demand for holiday travel, more costly summer fuel. Whatever excuse the big oil companies are using, you can expect to pay more for gas across Michigan and wherever else you might be traveling this weekend. Around southwest Michigan the prices jumped more than $.30 from $2.77 to $3.09 during the night this past Tuesday. AAA's Fuel Gauge Report is showing the average price of regular unleaded gasoline in Michigan to be running about $2.91 per gallon. That is up about $.07 from the Michigan average at the beginning of this week.

Gas prices across Michigan are down this week to a statewide average of $2.809 for regular unleaded. That is about $.08 lower than last week's prices. Michigan gas prices are also down about $.06 from this time last month when the average price was $2.864. We filled up in Sturgis over the weekend for $2.63 a gallon for regular unleaded. Elsewhere along U.S. 12 we saw gas prices anywhere from $2.78 all the way up to $2.99 (in Jonesville at the BP station). I thought that prices would increase the closer we got to Michigan International Speedway with the big NASCAR race this weekend. It was a pleasant surprise to see gas prices hold steady and I was grateful to fill up for $2.63.

Well, gas prices are holding steady at $2.88 which is about where they were last week. A year ago at this time gas prices had crept up to $2.159. To think that we were concerned about those prices. Hah! If we only knew. Matt Helms has an interesting Question and Answer column today in the Detroit Free Press. One of the questions is about the necessity of the third digit in gas prices (i.e. $2.887 per gallon). Apparently, back in the days when a penny was worth something (besides the penny pony at Meijer) gas stations used that third digit to be "cheaper" than other stations around them to earn your business.
